If you’re wondering what I’m going to do with my time, look no further 😉 My Mom gave me a Babylock Evolve Serger Sewing machine recently with the idea that my wife, Susie, would use it. Susie’s really big on knitting and my Mom figured that she’d be into sewing as well. Susie wasn’t terribly interested in using it so I decided that I would try it out to see if I could make my Mom something nice with it.
What the heck is a serger? A serger is basically a sewing machine that lets you do something called an overlock stitch and can optionally cut fabric at the same time. The machine reminds me of some woodworking machines like a table saw and router with dovetail jig. You basically feed fabric through like a normal sewing machine, but as you feed it through, the edge is cut so the seam has a consistent edge finish, and the overlock connects the pieces of fabric together.
The first thing I did was take it out of the moving-box-sized box that it came in. The machine seems so complicated that I recommend asking someone who knows how to use it to demonstrate at least the basics. I spent about four hours figuring out how to thread the thing! Once you thread it a few times though, it doesn’t seem so hard. Threading is just a tedious task because for each kind of stitch you need to add or remove needles, add or remove thread, adjust around 5 different settings, etc. This particular machine allows you to use up to five needles at once. In addition to the needles, you can also use up to three different threads underneath the needles.
The machine came with a manual that shows a bunch of different stitches you can do. I’ll post more info about some of the different stitches once I figure them out myself. Here are some more pictures of this interesting machine:
